 Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstal, famous chef and supporter of sustainable lifestyle shocked Britain with his January TV show regarding fish discards in the northern seas. EU regulations force fishermen to throw back in the sea half of the daily catch. Thousands of tons of perfectly healthy fish are sorted on board. If the quota of the fisherman for certain species is used up – these fish have to be thrown back – dead. Thousands of tons of endangered species are wasted, sea eco balance destroyed and valuable food source endangered. Hugh´s action received enormous support in the UK and, as it seems, support of the EU Commissioner for this matter, Mrs. Maria Damanaki. However, any EU decision takes a very long time so constant pressure is necessary.
